Hezbollah has said in a statement that it has killed at least 70 members of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in southern Lebanon. This statement, made on Oct. 23, is an update from a statement it made the previous week saying it has killed 55 IDF troopers.
Israel has only confirmed the deaths of around 20 soldiers inside Lebanon since Oct. 1, when its ground invasion of southern Lebanon began. Another 30 IDF soldiers were killed since Oct. 8, 2023, when Hezbollah began its artillery, rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel.
In addition to the 70 alleged IDF deaths, Hezbollah also claimed in a statement that its defense of southern Lebanon has led to “more than 600 wounded officers and soldiers of the Israeli enemy army.”
Moreover, Hezbollah said it has destroyed a whole host of Israeli military vehicles. These include 28 Merkava main battle tanks, four military bulldozers, an armored personnel carrier and one unspecified armored vehicle.
Hezbollah also claims to have shot down four Israeli drones – three Hermes 450 drones and one Hermes 900 drone.
Hezbollah’s statement notes that the toll “does not include the Israeli enemy’s losses in military bases, sites and barracks in the north and depth of occupied Palestine.” Hezbollah refers to the entirety of internationally recognized Israel as “occupied Palestine.”
The militant group’s statement noted that while the “tally” on Israeli troops and military equipment is significant, it emphasizes that the more important fact is that Hezbollah has been confronting Israeli troops everywhere in southern Lebanon. The IDF failed “to control or occupy any village along the frontlines fully,” the group said.
The militant group’s statement, crafted by Hezbollah’s Operations Room in the form of a “field summary” of ground confrontations between Hezbollah units and “Israeli occupation forces,” was provided to the Lebanese Arabic-language news outlet Al Mayadeen.
In addition to providing a summary of recent confrontations between Hezbollah ground units and the IDF, the statement also provides a summary of the recent activities of its other branches – namely, the Air Defense Unit, the Air Force and the Missile Force.
Hezbollah’s Air Defense Unit has been “actively engaging Israeli reconnaissance and combat drones and aircraft over Lebanon,” resulting in the alleged downing of the four aforementioned Israeli drones.
Hezbollah’s Air Force, consisting entirely of drones, “including advanced models,” has allegedly been continuing to strike Israeli military bases.
Meanwhile, the Missile Force “continues to target Israeli troops, military sites and barracks along the Lebanese-Palestinian [Israeli] border and within occupied northern Palestine [northern Israel].” These missile strikes have also allegedly reached strategic and military bases in central Israel, and Hezbollah has confirmed the use of at least one precision-guided missile.
Hezbollah’s Operations Room further claimed that its arsenal of rockets, missiles and drones is “gradually increasing,” and more and more units are being moved to the border and are striking “all the way to the depths of occupied Palestine.”
