Russian President Vladimir Putin is warning the United Kingdom of “serious consequences” as he accused the country’s special forces of leading a raid to disrupt Russian nuclear power plants.
Putin further warned British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that he “doesn’t understand” the serious risks of British involvement in the ongoing special military operation in Ukraine. Putin’s accusations against Britain and Sunak were made on Sept. 12 while he was speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok in the Russian Far East. He alleged that his country’s forces had apprehended Ukrainian saboteurs who were planning to damage power lines at a Russian nuclear power plant. He further alleged that they were trained by British special forces.
“Not long ago, as a result of clashes on our territory, the Federal Security Service, during the armed struggle, captured a number of people. A few were killed, and the rest were taken captive,” said Putin. “It turned out that this was a sabotage group belonging to the Security Service of Ukraine.”
“Interrogations were conducted. What did they indicate? Their mission was to damage one of our nuclear power plants, to wreck power lines – high-voltage power lines – in order to eventually disrupt the power station’s operation – and this is not the first such attempt,” continued Putin. “Meanwhile, [the saboteurs] revealed during their interrogation that they trained under the guidance of British instructors.”
In his speech, Putin wondered whether the British “understand what they are playing with, or not?”
He further alleged that Sunak may be attempting to provoke Russia into responding in kind by sending its own saboteurs to attack Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
“Does the British leadership and the prime minister even know what their special forces are doing in Ukraine?” asked Putin. He then noted that it was possible that the British special forces were acting independently of British leadership and were instead acting on instructions given by the United States. “Either way, we know the final beneficiary.”
“But do they realize what they are playing with?” asked Putin, accusing Britain and the West of underestimating Russia. “I know there will be howling that starts after words like ‘These are threats,’ ‘Nuclear blackmail,’ and so on.”
Perhaps predicting skepticism from the West regarding these allegations, Putin said: “I assure you this is the total pure truth. So these [saboteurs] are telling this to us during interrogation. I know some can say, ‘They will say anything under a gun.’ This is not true. And the leadership of the British special forces knows I am telling the truth.”
“But I am not sure the leadership of Great Britain understands what’s going on,” Putin concluded. “These kinds of things are seriously concerning because they [the U.K.] don’t feel the ground – which can lead to serious consequences.”
Sunak himself has not responded to Putin’s allegations. Instead, a government spokesperson said: “We’re not providing a running commentary on Russian allegations which only serve to distract from Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.”
Around a day before Putin’s allegations, Sunak alleged that Russia targeted a civilian cargo ship at a Ukrainian port in the Black Sea carrying Ukrainian grain for export.
“I can tell the House today that, thanks to declassified intelligence, we know the Russian military targeted a civilian cargo ship in the Black Sea with multiple missiles on the 24th of August,” said Sunak in a speech to Parliament. He then alleged that the attack only serves to demonstrate just how desperate Putin is.
“Ukraine has the right to export its goods through international waters and they have the moral right to ship grain that is helping feed the world,” said Sunak.
This comes right after he criticized Putin for not attending the recently concluded G20 Summit in India and right after he accused the Russian president of causing “horrendous suffering in Ukraine,” violating the charter of the United Nations and threatening global energy security.
